Severe storms and flooding in the Czech Republic

Overview

Severe thunderstorms, supercells, and heavy rainfall have caused widespread disruption across the Czech Republic. In early August, storms in the Vysočina, Olomoucký, Pardubický, and Jihomoravský regions resulted in fallen trees, blocked roads, and power outages for approximately 900 households. In the Ústecký region, a storm at Lake Most left a paddleboard group stranded; search operations led to the recovery of one body, while another individual remained missing. Later in the month, the Pardubice Region experienced further severe weather, causing widespread damage to high-voltage lines and leaving between 3,500 and 4,000 households without electricity.

On August 19, extreme weather patterns affected much of Central Europe. In the Czech Republic, heavy rainfall and wind caused power outages for thousands of households, particularly in the Liberec region, and disrupted railway services. Similar severe conditions were reported in Slovakia, where a supercell in Bratislava caused flooding, fallen trees, and minor injuries.

By August 20, additional severe storms and strong winds swept through several regions. In the Hradec Králové Region, approximately 1,700 households lost electricity, while the Pardubice Region saw roughly 940 households lose power. The Liberec Region saw nearly 80 interventions related to fallen trees. In Prague, the Botič and Rokytka rivers reached the first flood activity level, causing flooded underpasses in Krč and widespread delays across the Prague Integrated Transport (PID) rail network. In Central Bohemia, the Nedrahovice-Rudolec station recorded 96.7 mm of rain in 24 hours. In the Kutná Hora region, authorities conducted preventive evacuations of two children's camps due to rising water and mud. Firefighters reported over 700 calls for assistance, primarily involving fallen trees, flooded basements, and clearing mud from roads. In the Brdy region, supercells brought localized hail and intense downpours.
