Skopje storm aftermath: park restoration and tree reuse
Overview
Following the late‑July 2026 windstorm that felled hundreds of trees in Skopje, municipal response has broadened. On 22 July, Stojanche Angelov, head of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, warned that the damage underscores the need for strict compliance with building codes and called for coordinated tree‑removal efforts. The city’s public enterprise “Parks and Greenery” began collecting large trunks for conversion into components for summer houses, urban furniture and benches, while smaller branches were sent to landfill and earmarked as firewood for vulnerable families, as reported on 25 July.
Mayor Orce Gjorgievski posted a video on 1 August showing the first section of City Park cleared, infrastructure repaired and new saplings planted, with work continuing in a second section. By 6 August the municipality announced a motorbike park on Vodno built from healthy storm‑fallen trunks, providing a recreational facility for all ages. A large autumn reforestation drive is planned for September, complementing ongoing restoration of Vodno’s footpaths and mountain‑rescue services. The overall effort aims to turn storm waste into lasting community assets while reinforcing safety standards.
