South African Football Association presidential election

The South African Football Association (SAFA) presidential election in Johannesburg saw incumbent Danny Jordaan defend his position against challenger Sandile Zungu. Prior to the vote, Zungu, the president of AmaZulu, campaigned on platforms of improved school football and stricter financial discipline. He also raised allegations of electoral misconduct, including claims of “political maneuvering” and the “offering of financial inducements to influence votes.”

On September 12, Jordaan secured a fourth term, receiving 157 votes to Zungu’s 82. This victory extends Jordaan’s leadership, which began in 2013, until 2030. The re-election takes place while Jordaan faces legal scrutiny regarding allegations of fraud, theft, and conspiracy involving the alleged misuse of over R1.3 million in SAFA funds between 2014 and 2018. The state alleges these funds were used for private security and public relations services without proper approval. Jordaan has denied all allegations of financial misconduct and past accusations of sexual assault.

Following his win, Jordaan endorsed FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s bid for re-election and expressed support for the FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative to attract private investment into football. While supporting the principle of outside investment, he noted a lack of consultation with FIFA members regarding the process. Defending his tenure against criticisms of governance and financial instability, Jordaan cited progress in player development, noting that South Africa’s Under-17, Under-20, and senior men’s teams all reached FIFA World Cups in the same cycle. However, reports indicate ongoing challenges, including regional funding shortages and a lack of audited financial statements in certain areas.
