South American higher education developments

Academic institutions in South America are focusing on structural reforms, regional expansion, and resource management. In early September 2026, discussions in Argentina and Paraguay included a symposium on historical climate resilience and a call for a second university reform described as an ‘academic, pedagogical, and curricular revolution’ to address systemic challenges. Following these discussions, the focus shifted toward institutional sustainability and regional reach. In Argentina, the National Interuniversity Council (CIN) proposed a 2027 budget of 11 trillion pesos to maintain the public university system. This proposal is intended for presentation to the national legislature to ensure the continued operation and predictability of the public university system. Further addressing student success, Unicaribe has launched the ‘Level Up: Es tiempo de seguir’ workshop series. Supported by the Ministry of National Education, this initiative provides emotional self-management tools to help first-semester students prevent university dropout. In mid-September 2026, new academic partnerships and specialized programs emerged in the agricultural sector. The National University of Asunción in Paraguay signed a Memorandum of Understanding with National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan to promote cooperation in sustainable production, ecosystem conservation, and climate resilience.
