Spain port infrastructure investment
Overview
In late July 2026, Spanish port authorities launched multi‑year investment programmes for Alicante and Vigo, targeting capacity growth, decarbonisation, and new electric supply for cruise ships. A week later, the Port Authority of Seville announced a €6.49 million rail‑crossing project and the inland dry port at Salamanca received a €5 million upgrade, both aimed at expanding rail‑freight capacity.
By early August, the Seville rail crossing was awarded to a joint venture of Magtel Operaciones, Extraco, and Construcciones e Proxectos and is slated for completion by 31 December 2026, featuring three 750‑metre tracks that will support the European Transport Network Core Node. Salamanca’s dry‑port expansion will add two warehouses for cereals and fertilisers, a container‑handling building, and four large truck scales, enabling storage of up to 900 TEU and an annual throughput of roughly 700,000 tonnes.
Simultaneously, work began on Cádiz’s waterfront, converting 22,500 m² of quay into a mixed‑use public space with pedestrian areas, gardens, playgrounds, and facilities for cruise‑ship buses. In Huelva, a €7.2 million EU‑funded extension of the southern quay railway terminal added a third 1,211‑metre track and modernised safety, signalling, drainage, and lighting, strengthening intermodal links to northern Spain and Europe.
In mid-August, the Port Authority of Vigo (APV) received approval from Puertos del Estado to increase its investment plan from €300 million to approximately €400 million over four years. This strategy aims to reach six million tons of cargo movement through projects such as a new car silo and ramp extensions at the Bouzas maritime terminal. Additionally, in Valencia, the shipping company Baleària has been cleared to construct a dedicated passenger and freight terminal at Muelle Sur, focusing on ferries and cargo.
