Spain SailGP Team performance and Valencia Grand Prix
Overview
The Spain SailGP Team, known as Los Gallos, saw their home advantage in Valencia end without a trophy. Despite a commanding start to the Valencia Grand Prix—where pilot Diego Botín led the team to two victories and a second-place finish in Group B—the Spanish crew was unable to secure a spot in the final race.
Following a difficult Sunday characterized by light winds, Los Gallos fell to third place in Group B. A scheduled fifth race was canceled due to a lack of wind, leaving the Spanish team tied on points with the second-place team but ultimately eliminated based on tiebreakers.
The US SailGP Team, piloted by Taylor Canfield, secured the Grand Prix victory by overtaking the BONDS Flying Roos in the final. The competition featured 13 international teams racing F50 catamarans under challenging weather conditions.
Beyond the racing, organizers estimated the Valencia event provided a 100 million euro boost to the city, attracting approximately 100,000 spectators over the weekend. Regarding the event's financing, public institutions in Valencia are investing a total of 4 million euros to sponsor the Sail Grand Prix. This funding is split between the Valencia City Council, which is paying 1.2 million euros, the Generalitat Valenciana, which has committed 10 million euros for three editions (including 2026, 2027, and 2028), and the Diputación de València, contributing 800,000 euros annually. To justify the expenditure, the Valencia City Council estimated an advertising impact of 1.59 euros for every euro invested.
