Spanish Moros y Cristianos festivals (July‑Aug 2026)
Entities: Cocentaina · Amparo Folgado · María Fernández · Luis Sentí Timoner · La Vila Joiosa
Overview
The Moros y Cristianos celebrations across the Valencian Community continued to be promoted in July‑August 2026. On 26 July the federation in Dénia presented its programme at the nautical club, naming Luis Sentí Timoner as pregonero and unveiling a poster by artist Juan Caravaca, with mayor Rafa Carrió and councilor Raúl García de la Reina in attendance. La Vila Joiosa announced a night‑time “gran batalla” featuring an Embajada Contrabandista, a Beduina embassy and a historic Desembarco recreating the 1538 attack, and applied for Intangible Cultural Heritage status for its beach events.
Later that day Orihuela marked the 50th anniversary of its comparsa with a three‑part embajada led by Francisco Sánchez Mateos, showcasing white and black horses, a ballet and a family carriage that displayed the ambassador’s children while recalling the Pact of Teodomiro. Torrent staged a reenactment of the Reconquista, symbolically returning a tower to the Christian side and adding a tribute to King Jaume I on the 750th anniversary of his death, with mayor Amparo Folgado and councilor María Fernández commenting on the tradition’s strength.
In early August Cocentaina began its four‑day festival (7‑10 August) honouring patron saint San Hipólito Mártir, featuring the “Nit de l’Olla”, fireworks, concerts and the traditional Entrada. Mayor Rubén Muñoz highlighted the 50th anniversary of the Union Nacional de Entidades Festeras de Moros y Cristianos (UNDEF). Alfarrasí’s programme (7‑18 August) added a scientific conference, a solar‑eclipse observation, religious rites and nightly musical shows, further blending heritage with innovative activities.
