Star Wars 50th anniversary projects
Overview
Lucasfilm has announced several upcoming projects to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ‘A New Hope’. A central feature is a five-issue crossover comic series with Marvel Comics titled ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’, scheduled for release between January and May 2027. The narrative involves a reality-shattering spell that transports the events of ‘A New Hope’ into the Marvel Universe’s Earth-616. This allows Star Wars characters such as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca to interact with Marvel heroes including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, and Scarlet Witch.
A central conflict in the comic series will involve an alliance between Darth Vader and Doctor Doom. The series is set to be written by Kevin Smith and illustrated by David Marquez.
Writer Kevin Smith has revealed that he approached the project with the “rhythm and structure of a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie in mind.” Smith noted that while Marvel had reportedly sought such a crossover for years, Lucasfilm had previously declined. To manage the complexities of the two franchises, Smith proposed limiting the scope to characters originally introduced in the 1977 film. He was selected for the project by Marvel and Lucasfilm Publishing due to his familiarity with both universes.
Other anniversary festivities include a Welsh redub of the 1977 film premiering on Christmas Day and a behind-the-scenes exhibition titled ‘Star Wars: The Experience – A Journey Through the Galaxy’ in February 2027. Additionally, an animated Disney+ special, ‘LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian’, is set for release on September 2, featuring Luke Skywalker, though Mark Hamill will not provide the character's voice.
