Student death following alleged bullying in Pemalang

Overview

A seven-year-old second-grade student, Muhammad Hasbi Al Aqib (MHA), died in Pemalang, Central Java, following suspected bullying and physical violence at SD Negeri 01 Kebondalem. The victim’s mother reported that while the child initially did not disclose the abuse, he later informed doctors during medical examinations for severe abdominal pain that older students had punched him in the stomach and kicked him with shoes. During a nine-day hospitalization, the child experienced vomiting, bloody stools, and extreme pain.

Following the death, Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) Commission III began monitoring the investigation, with member Abdullah calling for a “swift, thorough, and transparent investigation.” Preliminary findings suggested the assault occurred during a school break near the school bathrooms, triggered by personal friction or insults rather than extortion.

In response to the incident, the Indonesian Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection (Kemen PPPA) has implemented remedial measures. Under the Juvenile Criminal Justice System Law, the children involved have been assigned to six months of coaching at the Antasena Social Welfare Institution (LPKS) in Magelang as a resolution outside the formal judicial process. Ciput Eka Purwianti, Assistant Deputy for the Provision of Services for Children Requiring Special Protection, stated that this measure serves as both accountability and an educational tool to teach that actions resulting in loss of life carry legal consequences. The Pekalongan Correctional Center (Bapas) will provide assistance and supervision during this period. The Ministry emphasized the necessity for schools and families to collaborate in strengthening safe school cultures.
