Suspected poisoning incidents in Turkey

Overview

A series of suspected poisoning incidents has affected various populations across Turkey. In Istanbul, approximately 30 people were hospitalized in the Esenyurt district after consuming chicken doner at a restaurant. Concurrently, labor unions called for a boycott at Beylikdüzü State Hospital following reports that over 30 healthcare workers fell ill after meals.

By early October, the scope of suspected poisoning expanded to include students in three different cities. In Burdur, 52 students at Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) required medical attention after experiencing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain at the Safahat KYK Girls' Dormitory. In Kırklareli, approximately 20 high school students from Büyükkarıştıran Anadolu Lisesi were hospitalized after consuming chicken doner. Additionally, in Edirne, 14 students at Atatürk Middle School were hospitalized due to gas exposure caused by the accidental mixing of cleaning supplies.

On October 12, the pattern of mass illness extended to the Kemalpaşa district of Izmir, where approximately 80 workers were hospitalized with suspected food poisoning. On October 16, a suspected mass food poisoning incident in the Kurtalan district of Siirt affected 88 people, including 77 students, potentially linked to chicken wraps.

On October 19, a large-scale incident occurred in the İnegöl district of Bursa. Following a community event known as the 2nd Traditional Mevlid-i Şerif and Rice Day, 182 people sought medical attention after consuming chicken rice and ayran. Participants reported nausea and vomiting approximately three hours after the meal. Authorities have collected samples for testing, noting preliminary reports that some of the ayran may have been past its expiration date.
