Tanzania healthcare and public service improvements

Tanzanian officials are implementing various initiatives to strengthen the nation’s healthcare infrastructure and public service delivery.

Initial efforts focused on improving emergency response and hospital oversight. In the Pwani region, Health Minister Mohamed Mchengerwa provided an ambulance to the Kibaha District Council to support the Magindu Health Center with maternal, neonatal, and accident-related emergencies. Simultaneously, Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba conducted inspections at Mwananyamala Regional Referral Hospital in Dar es Salaam to monitor the quality of medical care and social service delivery.

Subsequent developments show an expansion toward infrastructure construction and administrative cooperation. The government is seeking funding to build new health centers in several high-need wards, such as Namhula and Chitengule, to provide surgical and emergency services to larger populations. Additionally, Tanzania’s digital governance and public administration systems have drawn international interest, evidenced by a Somali government delegation visiting to study the country’s digital tools for employment and pension systems.

Recent focus has shifted toward prioritizing primary healthcare infrastructure and medical equipment. During the Second International Primary Health Care Conference in Arusha, Prof. Riziki Silas Shemdoe, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (TAMISEMI), emphasized the critical role of primary health centers. Data from 2025 indicates that primary-level facilities, which comprise 95.8 percent of the country’s 8,288 government health centers, handled 86 percent of the 32.3 million outpatient visits. Furthermore, 95.6 percent of the 2.09 million women who gave birth in public facilities received services at the primary level. To improve efficiency, 96.6 percent of these centers are connected to the GoTHOMIS system, and 87.6 percent are linked to the GePG system.
