Telangana law enforcement and crime trends

The Telangana state government has demonstrated significant progress in cybercrime prevention and investigation. In a PRAGATI review conducted by the Prime Minister’s Office, Telangana ranked first in India across nine parameters, including the establishment of the country’s first S4C centre and the implementation of the e-Zero FIR system. The state reported an 88% disposal rate on its Grievance Redressal Module and successfully restored approximately Rs 16.42 crore in cyber-fraud proceeds.

To address evolving public safety challenges, the Telangana Police Department is restructuring its workforce. Director-General of Police C. V. Anand announced the redeployment of 513 personnel from specialized units, such as Greyhounds, OCTOPUS, and SIB, to eight different departments. This shift responds to declining Maoist activity and Left-Wing Extremism, allowing the department to prioritize modern threats including cybercrime, drug trafficking, online betting, investment fraud, and food adulteration. The largest portion of redeployed staff, 224 personnel, will join Traffic Management and Road Safety, while 80 will move to Food Adulteration and Drug Control and 79 to Vigilance and Enforcement. Other allocations include the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Cyber Security Bureau, and the Crime Investigation Department.

Recent crime statistics presented by DGP Anand indicate that total crime cases in Telangana rose from 265,377 to 284,363 over the three-year period from 2023-24 to 2025-26, representing a 7.15 percent increase. Notable surges include a 46.10 percent rise in narcotics-related cases and a 1,704 percent increase in organized crime. Conversely, cybercrime cases dropped by 13.29 percent, and serious crimes saw a 10.33 percent reduction.
