Tunisia stock market rally, drop and circuit‑breaker

Overview

In mid‑July 2026 the Tunis Stock Exchange’s benchmark Tunindex surged to a record 21,552.73 points, a 6.9 % weekly gain and a 60.2 % year‑to‑date rise, driven by monetary easing, a Fitch sovereign‑rating upgrade and strong equity appetite despite limited liquidity.

A sharp reversal occurred on 28 July when the index fell more than 3 %, triggering the automatic circuit‑breaker and a one‑hour trading halt. The decline coincided with a 24 % year‑on‑year revenue drop at Tunisia Profilés Aluminium (TPR), caused by raw‑material shortages linked to Gulf‑region geopolitical disruptions; TPR nevertheless cut its debt by 42 % and kept its export market share.

Trading resumed on 29 July, with the Tunindex closing up 1.3 % on over 30 million dinars of volume. Exchange president Sonia Ben Frej described the pause as a routine risk‑management tool, while economist Aram Belhadj called the correction a normal adjustment after strong gains and affirmed solid market fundamentals.

The Conseil du Marché Financier convened a meeting with the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank, banks and brokerage representatives, reiterating that the suspension is a standard prudential mechanism and that Tunisia’s regulatory framework is robust enough to absorb short‑term market swings.
