Overview

Following a series of fatal industrial and field fires in late July 2026, Turkey’s emergency landscape expanded in late August to include more frequent wildfires and localized structural incidents. In Ankara’s Mamak district, authorities detained a suspect after determining a forest fire was “intentionally set.” Other urban incidents included a shop fire in Istanbul’s Eminönü and residential fires in Antalya and Hatay.

In late August, intensive firefighting operations involving helicopters and ground crews successfully brought major forest fires in Bursa and İzmir’s Kiraz district under control. Gendarmerie teams launched investigations in Bursa’s Kestel district to determine if the blazes were caused by negligence or intent. During this period, a landslide in Tunceli also forced the evacuation of a five-story residential building during construction excavation.

By early September, new forest fires emerged. A blaze in the Cenkyeri neighborhood of Soma, Manisa, was contained following a coordinated response involving multiple aircraft and helicopters. Simultaneously, emergency teams, including 76 personnel and four helicopters, were deployed to combat a wind-driven forest fire in the Bursa region, specifically between the Orhaneli and Orhangazi districts.
