Turkey hazelnut harvest labor program

Entities: Ordu Province · Mollabey Village · Zonguldak Province · Provincial Governor's Offices · Giresun Province

Overview

In early July, the Ordu governor announced a hazelnut yield survey and recruitment of seasonal agricultural workers from other Turkish regions. By late July, workers from Eastern and Southeast Anatolia had arrived in Ordu and neighboring Giresun, establishing temporary tent camps such as the 112‑tent settlement at Turnasuyu. Health teams performed medical checks, women prepared meals over open fires, and the workers said they were there to earn “bread money” for about a month of work.

Provincial authorities in Giresun organized parallel support: kindergarten classes, music, art, reading courses, a mobile library, sports activities, and social‑service assistance for women, children, the disabled and the elderly, while police forwarded child‑protection data.

The program expanded to Alaplı in Zonguldak Province, where workers set up tents in Mollabey village ahead of the 7 August harvest. Many travelled over 20 hours from places such as Şanlıurfa, expressing optimism about weather conditions. After roughly a month, they plan to move to the Karasu area of Sakarya Province before returning home before the school year starts.
