Turkey has formally requested that Interpol issue Red Notices for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and official Afek Moskovitch. This legal action follows proceedings in Istanbul regarding the May interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission of approximately 50 vessels and 430 activists attempting to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip.

The charges against 35 defendants include genocide, crimes against humanity, torture, and hijacking. Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek stated the government would not allow those responsible for crimes in Gaza to be protected by a “shield of impunity”.

Interpol is currently tasked with verifying whether the request complies with regulations that prohibit notices for activities of a primarily political or military nature. The move has significantly intensified diplomatic friction between Ankara and Tel Aviv, with the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office characterizing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as an “antisemitic dictator”.
