Turkey expands infrastructure ties with Northern Cyprus

Overview

In early July 2026 Ankara deepened outreach to the Turkish‑controlled north of Cyprus. On 6 July Turkey and Bulgaria adjusted the BOTAŞ‑Bulgargaz gas‑trade framework to boost pipeline capacity and curb Russian dependence. A week later, Vice‑President Cevdet Yılmaz, TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel and Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar signed a memorandum for two 22‑inch bidirectional subsea pipelines (about 101 km, 97 km under the Mediterranean) linking Anamur in Turkey to the Teknecik terminal. The US$700 million project, slated for 2028 commissioning, will mainly fuel electricity generation, cutting heavy‑oil use and power costs, though the Republic of Cyprus condemned it as illegal. On 10 July Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı inspected a 14‑project, 69‑billion‑lira water‑infrastructure programme that includes the “Asrın Projesi” subsea pipeline delivering 75 million m³ of water annually from Turkey’s Alaköprü Dam. On 20 July the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure launched the Eastern Mediterranean Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system in Northern Cyprus, built by HAVELSAN, providing 24‑hour radar, AIS and camera monitoring from a control centre in Gazimağusa. The same day Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu highlighted the AI‑enhanced version of the system, which can automatically identify vessels and flag illegal activities, positioning it as the “eye” of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the “Mavi Vatan”. By 28 July Turkish research vessel Oruc Reis began seabed surveys for the underwater gas pipeline between Anamur and Teknecik. The Republic of Cyprus lodged a formal protest, labeling the project a breach of international law and an infringement of its sovereignty.
