UK NHS autumn vaccination rollout
Overview
The NHS has initiated winter preparedness efforts by opening booking services for autumn flu and Covid-19 vaccinations. Starting September 1, flu vaccinations are available for pregnant women and specific groups of children, including those aged two to three, primary and secondary school students, and children in clinical risk groups.
As of early September, the annual autumn flu vaccination programme has launched across various regions in England, including West Yorkshire, Cambridgeshire, and Peterborough. The initial phase prioritizes pregnant women and young children, with most school-aged children from Reception to Year 11 expected to receive the nasal spray vaccine at school.
Eligibility expands on October 1 to include individuals aged 65 and over, those aged 18 to 65 in clinical risk groups, care home residents, carers, frontline healthcare workers, and close contacts of immunocompromised individuals. Covid-19 vaccinations will also become available on October 1 for those aged 75 and older, care home residents, and immunosuppressed individuals aged six months and older.
Health officials, including Chief Nursing Officer Duncan Burton and Health Secretary Yvette Cooper, have urged eligible citizens to book appointments via the NHS website, the NHS App, or by calling 119 to protect vulnerable populations and reduce pressure on the NHS. Officials noted that it is safe to receive both vaccines during a single appointment.
