UNEAC 65th anniversary celebrations in Cuba

Overview

The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) is marking its 65th anniversary with a national programme titled “Arte fiel”. The celebrations, which commemorate the organization’s founding on August 22, 1961, include book presentations, panels, concerts, and exhibitions across the country.

A central event at the national headquarters in Vedado, Havana, was attended by President Miguel Díaz-Canel and UNEAC President Marta Bonet de la Cruz. The ceremony honored the organization’s history, which began under its first president, National Poet Nicolás Guillén, and included the presentation of the “Arte Fiel” distinction to various cultural figures.

Regional festivities have expanded to include several provinces. In Santiago de Cuba, the Nicolás Guillén Diploma and the Palma Real Honorary Award were presented to artists and the Caguayo Foundation. In Bayamo, celebrations included a fair and musical performances, while Pinar del Río saw the inauguration of the Calle Real cultural center.

In Villa Clara, a ceremony at the Foro Agesta honored the institution’s connection to national identity and paid tribute to former provincial presidents. During this event, provincial president Ricardo Riverón Rojas highlighted UNEAC’s commitment to supporting new creators. In Guantánamo, the provincial branch reopened its La Celosía gallery with the exhibition ‘Limbo’ by Alejandro Lescay Hierrezuelo, featuring 13 works exploring themes of solitude and existence.

Throughout the celebrations, Marta Bonet de la Cruz has emphasized UNEAC’s role in creative development and its commitment to serving the people through art, despite what she described as “external hostilities”.
