Uruguay port labor conflict and political interpellation
Overview
The Partido Colorado announced plans to interpellate Minister of Labor and Social Security Juan Castillo regarding an ongoing conflict at the Port of Montevideo. Deputy Adrián Juri noted that the proposal to hold the interpellation in October had gained consensus among several opposition parties, including the Partido Nacional, Partido Independiente, Cabildo Abierto, and Identidad Soberana.
While a preliminary agreement was reached between the Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP) company and labor unions, the opposition sought to address the dispute alongside broader national labor issues.
In early October, Minister Castillo postponed a scheduled hearing before the Senate's Transport and Public Works Commission. The Ministry cited “agenda issues” and the ongoing finalization of a new collective agreement as reasons for the delay.
Following this postponement, the Partido Nacional announced its support for the motion to interpellate Castillo. Juan Martín Rodríguez, a coordinator for the Blanco parliamentary group, criticized the Minister’s cancellation of the Senate appearance, stating that certain officials appear to “avoid oversight.” The motion, originally initiated by Deputy Juri, is scheduled for a vote in the Chamber of Representatives next Tuesday. If the motion passes, a date will be set for the Minister to testify before the chamber.
