Valve handheld slump deepens amid price and component woes

Overview

Valve’s handheld line remains under pressure following May 2026 price hikes that lifted the 512 GB OLED model to $789 and the 1 TB version to $949. This 44–46% increase, coupled with the discontinuation of the affordable LCD variant, has caused weekly sales to collapse by approximately 82%, falling from a 2025 peak of 11,000–18,000 units to roughly 1,400–3,000. Revenue has similarly dropped by about 72%, and the Deck’s Steam ranking slipped from the top 5 to around 14th.

Market pressures are compounded by component shortages. Valve engineers have warned that ongoing RAM and SSD shortages, driven by AI demand, are “still getting worse” and may push Steam Machine prices higher through 2027. Competition from higher-spec handhelds like the ASUS ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go continues to erode demand.

To address affordability, Valve has introduced certified refurbished Steam Deck OLED models on its official website. These manufacturer-renewed units include warranties comparable to new models. In Europe, the refurbished 512 GB OLED model starts at 459 euros, compared to the 779 euro retail price, while the 1 TB model is available for 549 euros.

Maintenance costs for older hardware also remain a concern. While the OLED battery remains at $79.99, the official replacement battery for the Steam Deck LCD has seen massive price hikes through iFixit. After an initial rise to $129.99 in August, the cost for an official LCD battery reached $179.99, a 125% increase from its launch price.
