Vande Bharat Express expansion in Gujarat

Overview

The Vande Bharat Express service in Gujarat has seen recent expansions and route adjustments. In mid-August, the Sabarmati-Veraval service began operating via a new Gandhigram-Botad route, replacing the previous alignment through Viramgam, Surendranagar, and Rajkot to provide more direct connectivity to the Saurashtra region.

By late August and into September, the Ministry of Railways and the Railway Board approved a new service connecting Surat in Gujarat to Udaipur City in Rajasthan. This service, designated as train numbers 26903 and 26904, marks the first Vande Bharat service for Surat and the sixth premium train for the state of Gujarat. The new route was expected to launch around the Sharadiya Navratri festival, which begins on October 11th.

On October 1, the Mumbai Central division of Western Railway announced that bookings for the Surat–Udaipur service officially commenced at 8:00 AM. The service will operate six days a week, excluding Tuesdays. Train 26903 is scheduled to depart Surat at 6:10 AM, arriving in Udaipur at 1:40 PM, while the return service, Train 26904, departs Udaipur at 3:35 PM and arrives in Surat at 11:00 PM.

The eight-coach train covers approximately 690 km in roughly 7.5 hours, significantly reducing travel time compared to the current Udaipur City-Bandra Superfast Express. Scheduled stops include Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. The service offers Executive Chair Car and AC Chair Car classes. This new service replaces the existing Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat Express, which will be permanently discontinued.
