Jonas Vingegaard ends 2026 season due to injury
Overview
Following a high-speed crash during Stage 15 of the Tour de France, Jonas Vingegaard underwent surgery for a fractured collarbone. While the rider initially began a cautious rehabilitation program, his 2026 season has now been officially ended.
Prior to the injury, Vingegaard had enjoyed a successful season, winning Paris-Nice, the Tour of Catalonia, and the Giro d'Italia. However, persistent shoulder pain and the consequences of the fracture have hindered his progress. Visma | Lease a Bike confirmed that the 29-year-old Dane will not compete in any further races this year, ruling out the Vuelta a España and the World Championships in Montréal.
Before the final decision was made, Vingegaard’s participation in the World Championships was a subject of debate within the cycling community. Former professional Michael Rasmussen advised the Danish national team to leave Vingegaard out to avoid creating ‘unnecessary expectations’, suggesting riders like Mattias Skjelberg instead. Conversely, Mads Pedersen expressed a desire to see Vingegaard in the selection, believing there was sufficient time for recovery.
Ultimately, Visma | Lease a Bike performance chief Mathieu Heijboer stated the decision was made because it is unlikely Vingegaard could return to a competitive level capable of winning races this year. Team director Marc Reef and management have shifted their focus entirely toward Vingegaard’s recovery and building a foundation for a successful return in the 2027 season.
