Vodafone Greece and national fiber optic expansion
Overview
Vodafone Greece continues to expand its telecommunications infrastructure, having invested over 1.5 billion euros over the last decade into 5G networks, fiber optics, and subsea cables. At the Advanced Telecoms Summit 2026, Network Director Nikos Plevris noted that the company’s proprietary fiber optic network currently serves more than 620,000 homes and businesses. Following a doubling of active FTTH connections in 2025, Vodafone aims to reach 850,000 FTTH lines by 2027 to align with European broadband averages.
Strategic subsea cable systems remain a priority, with the station in Tympaki, Crete, hosting the 2Africa and India-Europe Xpress (IEX) systems. Vodafone has also completed approximately 1,500 kilometers of subsea and terrestrial fiber optic cables across the Aegean and Ionian seas. Additionally, Vodafone’s 5G network now covers 96.9% of the population across 249 cities and 72 municipalities, with ongoing improvements to coverage in critical infrastructure such as airports, ports, and maritime routes.
This expansion occurs alongside rapid growth from DEH FiberGrid, which has expanded its 100% fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) internet service to reach 1.5 million homes and businesses across 70 regions in Greece. Recent coverage expansions include Volos, Kalamata, Lamia, Artemida, Agios Dimitrios in Attica, Polichni, and Sykia in Thessaloniki. DEH FiberGrid aims for 2 million points by the end of 2026 and 3.8 million by 2028.
Notably, DEI FiberGrid is approaching a joint venture deal with Vodafone to create a 50/50 wholesale FTTH enterprise, a move intended to intensify competition with OTE. To support such digital transformation, the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance is consulting on a new legislative framework for gigabit infrastructure.
