Volvo electric vehicle development and deployment
Overview
Volvo is advancing its electric vehicle portfolio through both new hardware launches and software enhancements. The company announced the introduction of electric heavy-duty trucks, such as the Volvo FH Electric and FH Aero Electric, which are designed for long-distance transport in Nordic climates and can handle gross combination weights up to 80 tons. These models are slated for rollout in several European countries starting in early 2027.
Simultaneously, Volvo has expanded the functionality of its compact EX30 SUV via over-the-air software updates. These updates introduce vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing the vehicle to serve as a mobile power source providing up to 3 kilowatts of electricity to external devices, such as tools or camping equipment, via a separate adapter. To ensure the vehicle remains drivable, the system is programmed to stop delivering power once the battery charge drops below 20 percent.
In certain European markets, including Spain, France, and Poland, the software rollout also includes ‘Plug & Charge’ functionality. This feature enables the vehicle to communicate directly with compatible charging stations to initiate the charging process automatically, removing the need for external apps or cards. The update further enhances the user experience through a redesigned settings menu and a customizable context bar.
Recent developments indicate that the V2L software update is being deployed globally to both new and existing EX30 owners. For model year 2026 vehicles and newer, the ‘Plug & Charge’ functionality is being introduced in select European markets to automate the public charging process.
In Sweden, the Lasta project is also working to scale electrified heavy transport by expanding access to electric trucks and mobile charging infrastructure for the open market through 2028.
