Walmart e-commerce and restaurant delivery expansion

Overview

Walmart is expanding its e-commerce and delivery capabilities through technological automation and new service partnerships.

To support growth in its Walmart+ membership program, the retailer has begun installing Symbotic’s SymMicro system for e-commerce fulfillment. This automation is intended to accelerate in-store pickup and delivery operations. This initiative follows a broader partnership in which Walmart has committed to purchasing 400 automated systems to strengthen its supply chain.

Walmart is also aggressively expanding its restaurant-delivery market presence. Following an initial partnership with Dunkin’ via Inspire Brands—which allows customers to order Dunkin’ items through the Walmart app and website—the retailer has entered a new collaboration with Papa Johns. This partnership enables customers to order pizzas, wings, sandwiches, and desserts via the Walmart app or website, with the option to bundle these items with grocery and household essentials through Walmart Express Delivery.

Notably, Papa Johns represents the first national restaurant brand available through this service that will be fulfilled entirely from restaurant locations outside of Walmart stores. This marks a strategic shift from previous models that focused on brands located within Walmart facilities. By leveraging its Spark driver network and internal last-mile delivery infrastructure, Walmart aims to compete with third-party platforms like DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub while increasing customer shopping frequency.
