Water supply maintenance disruptions
Entities: Juiz de Fora · Estação de Tratamento de Água (ETA) · Prolagos · Cesama · Mondim de Basto Municipality
Overview
Late July 2026 saw a wave of scheduled water‑service interruptions across Brazil and Portugal, with utilities in Rio Branco, Rio de Janeiro, Brusque, Juiz de Fora and several Portuguese towns carrying out repairs, pipeline upgrades and reservoir adjustments. Authorities warned residents to store water and expected temporary colour or taste changes.
In the following days the focus shifted to additional Brazilian cities. Manaus’ Ponta do Ismael production complex was slated for preventive maintenance on 5 August, shutting both treatment stations for twelve hours and prompting tanker deliveries to hospitals and schools. Porto Alegre’s Department of Water and Sewage scheduled three separate actions between 3 and 5 August, including valve and fuse replacements that could affect the Glória neighbourhood, the Sarandi district and several communities around the Jardim Ipê pumping station, with gradual nightly restoration and possible water‑quality variations.
Meanwhile, municipal crews in Caxias do Sul continued drainage‑gallery work to avoid traffic disruption when schools reopened, and Brusque performed underground pipeline reinforcement on three streets ahead of expected heavy rains. In the Região dos Lagos, the Juturnaíba treatment plant was serviced, potentially reducing supply to several coastal towns; residents were advised to keep inlet valves open, conserve water and expect tankers for essential services, with full restoration taking up to 48 hours.
These updates illustrate an ongoing, coordinated effort by Brazilian water utilities to conduct preventive maintenance and infrastructure upgrades, consistently providing advance notice and mitigation measures to limit impact on households and critical services.
