Wer wird Millionär? production and contestant developments
Overview
The German television program ‘Wer wird Millionär?’ continues its run on RTL, hosted by Günther Jauch. The show maintains strict protocols for the telephone joker, which includes technical checks and a 30-second time limit.
Recent episodes have featured challenging questions that have tested both contestants and the host. In September 2026, Jauch criticized the production team over a question regarding the definition of a ‘doula’ and described a keyboard layout question as ‘completely unsolvable’, remarking, ‘Nobody knows that!’ In another instance, contestant Justin Martin opted to leave with 16,000 euros after failing to identify the film that displaced ‘Jeanne Dielman’ in a ranking; the correct answer was ‘Vertigo’. Conversely, teacher Toni Hackel secured 64,000 euros by successfully answering questions on zoology and mythology before stopping at the 125,000-euro mark.
In early October, RTL held a ‘3-Million-Euro-Week’ with a generational theme. During this event, Gabriele Schmickl lost her chance to qualify for the grand finale after an incorrect audience joker suggestion regarding a cult band; she selected ‘Die Toten Hosen’ instead of ‘Die Prinzen’, dropping to 500 euros. Other participants, such as Maya Upmann, also experienced significant losses.
Recent episodes have also seen rule confusion on set. Host Günther Jauch expressed frustration when an audience member, Peter Pick, claimed that winning a prize would bar him from returning to the studio for two years, a rule that appeared to catch the production team off guard. Additionally, contestant Carsten Muschalle lost winnings after failing to recognize an alliterative wordplay-based question regarding animal biology.
