Overview

In July 2026, West Virginia House delegate and Fayette County high‑school teacher David Elliott Pritt was arrested on a federal charge of enticement of a minor after allegedly grooming a 15‑year‑old girl through Roblox and Snapchat, exchanging explicit images and meeting in his classroom. Following the arrest, his teaching certification was suspended, he was removed from pay, and the House stripped him of his assistant majority‑leader role and committee assignments. Party leaders called for his resignation while he remained in federal custody awaiting a preliminary hearing.

State officials responded quickly. House Speaker Roger Hanshaw sent a letter to Governor Patrick Morrisey requesting an extraordinary session to consider expelling Pritt, and Secretary of State Kris Warner said Pritt remained eligible for the 2026 General Election ballot unless convicted, citing the 2025 vacancy‑replacement law.

On July 27, Pritt filed a one‑sentence resignation after appearing before a federal magistrate. The House Republican caucus, 81 of 91 members, wrote to Governor Morrisey asking that a special session be convened on Aug 10 to vote on his expulsion. The resignation does not halt the ongoing federal prosecution.
