Wildfires in Spain

Overview

In late August 2026, Spain experienced significant forest fires across several regions. In Almería, a blaze in Las Tres Villas destroyed approximately 200 hectares. In Seville, the Guardia Civil is investigating two individuals after a fire in Pilas, allegedly caused by welding sparks, destroyed a home and one hectare of land. In Córdoba, a fire in Los Blázquez burned 150 hectares, while in Huelva, officials are seeking a ‘Grave Emergency Zone’ declaration following a 33,000-hectare fire in Niebla. In Valencia, a major fire broke out in the Devesa del Saler within the Albufera Natural Park. The blaze, which burned between 31 and 48 hectares, prompted the activation of situation 2 of the Special Forest Fire Plan (PEIF) and the preventive evacuation of approximately 160 people. Authorities stated that investigations by Seprona indicate the fire was ‘likely intentional.’ By early September, the Valencia City Council and the Generalitat Valenciana began accelerating administrative procedures to regenerate the area. By mid-September, new fires emerged across the country. In Valencia, a fire in Tuéjar burned approximately 1,000 hectares within the Alto Turia Biosphere Reserve; despite being perimetrated, wind and potential storms have complicated containment, leading to the preventive evacuation of 25 people. In Lugo, a fire in the Serra do Courel near Quiroga burned between 250 and 380 hectares and remains uncontrolled due to terrain and wind. In Huelva, the Cartaya fire has been extinguished, while fires in Santa Bárbara de Casa and Alosno have stabilized. Additionally, a fire in Vilanova de Arousa destroyed a shed and killed several goats, and an investigation is underway in Valladolid regarding a fire at Íscar Castle that affected 178 hectares, suspected to be caused by negligence.
