WTT Europe Smash table tennis tournament in Malmö
Overview
The WTT Europe Smash table tennis tournament in Malmö, Sweden, began with the completion of the main tournament draw. The draw set several challenging matchups for Swedish competitors, including Truls Möregårdh against Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov and wildcard William Bergenblock against Hugo Calderano.
In the opening rounds, defending champion Truls Möregårdh was eliminated from the competition. He lost in straight sets (11–9, 11–3, 11–8) to Ovtcharov. Möregårdh described the loss as a “major disappointment” and attributed his performance to nerves, stating he entered the match incorrectly.
Following his victory over Möregårdh, Dimitrij Ovtcharov was later eliminated by Slovenia’s Darko Jorgić. Jorgić, ranked 15th in the world, secured a 3–1 set victory to advance to the quarterfinals, repeating his performance from the previous year. In the quarterfinals, Jorgić defeated Egypt’s Omar Assar with a score of 4–2 (10, 9, 7, -10, -8, 4). Although Jorgić held an initial 3–0 lead, Assar won the fourth and fifth sets before Jorgić secured the win in the sixth set. Jorgić stated he managed the pressure by playing more aggressively and reducing errors. This victory marked Jorgić’s first time reaching the semifinals of one of the world’s largest table tennis tournaments.
In the semifinals, Jorgić’s run ended as he was defeated by France’s Felix Lebrun. The 19-year-old Lebrun, ranked fifth in the world, won the match with a score of 4–0 (-5, -5, -8, -5). This victory marked the fifth time Lebrun has defeated Jorgić in their head-to-head matchups. Lebrun advanced to the final to face Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto.
