Xiaomi market expansion and product strategy
Overview
Xiaomi is undergoing a significant strategic shift as its revenue becomes increasingly diversified. While mobile devices accounted for over 70% of revenue in 2017, they were projected to represent approximately 40.8% by 2025. By the second quarter of 2026, smartphones generated 42,100 million yuan, making up 38.7% of turnover. Growth is now driven by Internet of Things (IoT) and lifestyle products (28.7%), electric vehicles, AI, and other new businesses (22.9%), and Internet services (8.3%).
To manage rising costs for memory-module and flash memory components—which have surged 300%—Xiaomi has implemented stock buybacks and raised prices on flagship models like the Xiaomi 17 series. This pricing pressure extended to the Japanese market in September 2026, where the company stated it “can no longer absorb the rising costs of components, specifically memory chips, within its own margins.”
As part of its budget and mid-range expansion, Xiaomi has launched the Redmi 17 series globally. In Ecuador, the Redmi 17 features a 7,500mAh battery and a 6.9-inch 120 Hz display, while the Redmi 17C 5G has also entered the market as an affordable 5G option with a 6,000mAh battery.
Technological advancements include the transition from MIUI to HyperOS 4, which utilizes a HyperCore architecture and AI-driven memory preloading. The company also introduced the XRING O3, a proprietary 3nm chip produced by TSMC. While this chip powers high-end devices like the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max, reports suggest that the most advanced hardware and full HyperOS capabilities may be restricted to the Chinese market. Additionally, Xiaomi expanded its power accessory lineup with new power banks offering up to 165W charging speeds.
