Xiaomi has officially announced HyperOS 4, its latest operating system update, which features a significant visual redesign and enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities. The update introduces a ‘Soft Light Glass’ (also referred to as ‘Liquid Glass’) aesthetic, utilizing translucent, multi-layered effects to simulate light refraction and depth across menus, notifications, the control center, and widgets. Performance optimizations are a core focus of this release. Utilizing the proprietary HyperCore kernel, the system employs predictive resource management and memory preloading to improve efficiency. Xiaomi claims that after extended use, application loading speeds can increase by up to 18% compared to HyperOS 3. Additionally, camera HDR processing and cold startup times have seen measurable reductions, alongside more stable video playback.

The update places heavy emphasis on AI through the introduction of Super XiaoAi 2.0, powered by the company’s proprietary MiMo large language model. This assistant is designed to move beyond simple commands to perform complex tasks, such as transcribing voice, organizing notes, image searching, and managing smart home or vehicle ecosystems.

A three-phase beta testing program has commenced in China, starting August 14. The initial rollout includes flagship devices such as the Xiaomi 17 series, Redmi K90 models, and Xiaomi Pad 8. Subsequent waves scheduled for late August and September will expand coverage to various Xiaomi 15 series, Redmi K100, and Mix Flip 2 devices. Notably, the update is designed to decouple OS versioning from Android releases, with some devices running on an Android 17 base. While a global release schedule has not yet been confirmed, independent developers have already successfully ported the software to older hardware, such as the nine-year-old Xiaomi Mi6, highlighting the lightweight nature of the new OS.
