64th New York Film Festival programming announcements

Overview

The 64th New York Film Festival, running from September 25 to October 12, has expanded its programming details following the initial Main Slate announcement. The Main Slate featured 32 films, including the opening night drama ‘Paper Tiger’ by James Gray and the centerpiece gala ‘Behemoth!’ by Tony Gilroy, alongside works by Pedro Almodóvar and Ryusuke Hamaguchi.

The festival subsequently unveiled its Spotlight lineup, which includes Tom McCarthy’s ‘A Statement,’ an ensemble film set in 1980 Florida regarding CO2 emissions starring Paul Rudd, Paul Giamatti, and Tatiana Maslany. Also in Spotlight is Jonathan Glazer’s documentary ‘Joy of Joys,’ a project described as ‘by children, for children’ that features footage from children in conflict zones such as Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, and Yemen. Other Spotlight entries include Takashi Yamazaki’s ‘Godzilla Minus Zero,’ Werner Herzog’s ‘Bucking Fastard,’ and Cristian Mungiu’s ‘Fjord.’

Further programming includes the Currents section, a program organized by Film at Lincoln Center focusing on international cinema and experimental projects. This selection consists of 15 feature films and 28 short films, including the world premiere of Tala Hadid’s ‘Bardi,’ which explores Moroccan horse riders. Other notable Currents films include ‘At Night’ by Beatrice Gibson and ‘Red Rocks’ by Bruno Dumont. Additionally, the festival will host a world premiere restoration of Fred Camper’s ‘Suicide Note’ as part of both the Currents and Revivals selections.
