Lawsuit filed following Amazon cargo jet crash in Miami

Overview

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Amazon and its aviation partners following the fatal Boeing 767 cargo jet crash at Miami International Airport. The widow of Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, one of the five victims killed in the accident, alleges negligence, inadequate training, and the operation of an unairworthy aircraft. The complaint asserts that the pilots touched down 4,000 feet past the target zone at speeds exceeding recommendations by more than 40 knots. This led to the aircraft overrunning the runway by approximately 1,300 feet, striking a van and an SUV before catching fire. All five fatalities occurred within the van. On September 6, 2026, the Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767-300, operated by contractor 21 Air LLC, was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when the incident occurred. The five fatalities were members of an airport cleaning crew traveling in a shuttle van owned by Professional Ocean Service Corp. Five other individuals were injured, with two remaining in critical condition. The two pilots survived and have been released from the hospital. NTSB preliminary findings and cockpit voice recordings indicate that during the final approach, one pilot repeatedly warned the other that the aircraft was approaching too fast, though the co-pilot failed to provide a consistent verbal response. Automated systems also issued multiple warnings regarding low altitude, including seven specific alerts such as ‘sink rate’ and ‘too low terrain’ in the moments preceding impact. While the crew appeared to attempt an aborted landing by increasing engine thrust, the maneuver was unsuccessful. Investigators are currently evaluating potential failures in the automatic braking systems and thrust reversers, as preliminary data suggests they were not utilized during the landing sequence. The NTSB also noted the plane made an unstable approach amid strong winds.
