Ankara cultural heritage and antique preservation

Overview

Cultural and historical heritage initiatives in Ankara have focused on engaging younger generations with the city’s history through events, festivals, and the restoration of historic structures.

In late September, the Anatolian Antique Dealers Association announced the ‘Antique Goods Days’ event for October 10-11 at Kuzu Effect AVM, driven by high demand for items like Ottoman-era copperware and historical carpets. This was followed by the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality’s ‘Ankara Heritage: An Evening in the Museum’ program and the Merkez Ankara Shopping Center’s ‘Ankara Culture Days’ festival, which aimed to revive traditional Sof fabric weaving.

Preservation efforts have increasingly focused on the functional repurposing of restored buildings. In the Gölbaşı district, the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality’s restoration of the Halaçlı Mehmet Ağa Mansion has transformed the site into a cultural hub. In collaboration with the Tohumluk Foundation, the mansion has hosted community events and art workshops, such as those featuring painter Hikmet Çetinkaya. Ayça Yusufoğlu Köroğlu, Head of the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Culture, Art and Social Affairs Department, stated that heritage teams restore significant buildings to provide them with functional purposes, ensuring assets remain active. Pınar Ayhan, Chairperson of the Tohumluk Foundation, noted the mansion now serves as a space connecting urban residents with rural communities.

Additionally, the Çankaya Municipality has initiated the ‘Çankaya Heritage’ project. Through a 25-year free allocation agreement with the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, the historic Mehmet Kınacı Vineyard House in the Ayrancı neighborhood is being transformed into a museum to showcase Ankara’s social history and traditional professions.
