Overview

In mid‑July 2026, Bosnia and Herzegovina held a series of remembrance ceremonies for World War II and 1990s atrocities. On 13 July, a gathering at the Dubravska plateau marked the 33rd anniversary of the 1943 Orašlje massacre—where German SS and Ustaše units killed 63 Bosniak civilians—and the 1993 killings of 15 residents by HVO/HV forces. During the ceremony, priest Ivo Šutalo denounced “sham veterans” who profit from false claims.

In late July, commemorations expanded across the country. On 21 July, the “21 July” association in Livno organized visits to wartime camp sites and a round‑table on preserving the truth for Bosniak victims. On 27 July, Drvar held a Day of Prayer marking the 85th anniversary of the 1941 murder of priest Waldemar Maximilian Nestor by Chetnik units. That same day, families and officials at the Sultanovići Catholic cemetery commemorated the 33rd anniversary of the 1993 killing of 311 Bosnian Croats in Bugojno, noting that 15 people remain missing and highlighting recent convictions of former ARBiH members. On 31 July, ceremonies in Šip honored seven ARBiH members killed by a grenade in 1992, while the Union of Veterans in Vogošća marked the Battle for Poljine.

In mid-August, the Bihać region held events to honor fallen defenders. In the community of Izačić, the ‘Izačiću, ponosan mi budi’ manifestation used empty chairs to symbolically represent 88 deceased residents. In Bužim, the 34th anniversary of the 505th Knightly Brigade was marked during the ‘Slobodarski dani viteškog grada Bužima 2026’ event. Presidency Chairman Denis Bećirović attended to pay respects to the late General Izet Nanić and other fallen soldiers. On 21 August, a memorial program was held at Korićanske stijene on Mount Vlašić to mark the 34th anniversary of the massacre of approximately 200 men.
