Brazil Samu service expansion and policy updates
Overview
In September 2026, Samu services focused on specialized training and fleet modernization. In Dourados, the Samu 192 Regional Emergency Education Nucleus conducted technical training at Faculdade Anhanguera to address a nationwide rise in psychiatric crisis calls. The training, involving the Mato Grosso do Sul Military Fire Department and Psychosocial Care Centers, focused on service integration and patient reception. Dr. Otávio Miguel Liston, general coordinator of Samu Regional Dourados, noted that new State Health Secretariat protocols are being established to qualify care across Mato Grosso do Sul, including for smaller municipalities.
Simultaneously, municipal upgrades to emergency health infrastructure continued. In Sinop, local authorities delivered two ambulances along with medical equipment, including 34 electrocardiogram machines and a mobile dental unit. In Fortaleza, the city received 10 new ambulances through the federal PAC Health program, a move intended to eventually renew approximately 80% of the city’s Samu fleet.
