Cofepris pharmaceutical safety alerts in Mexico
Overview
Mexico’s Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has issued several health alerts regarding the presence of counterfeit, adulterated, and stolen medications in the country.
Initially, Cofepris identified counterfeit Choragon 5000 UI fertility medication being sold through digital platforms and social media. Technical analysis with the manufacturer, Ferring, confirmed that the specific presentation had not been distributed in Mexico since 2023. Authorities noted irregular lot numbers with falsified expiration dates.
Subsequently, the agency expanded its warnings to include adulterated and stolen pharmaceuticals. Cofepris flagged Argliptin-D, a type 2 diabetes medication, noting that a specific lot was not imported to Mexico for commercialization. The agency also reported the theft of AstraZeneca medications and a voluntary recall for Apozemia XRMR 500 mg. Cofepris has advised the public to use only authorized distributors to avoid risks associated with unknown compositions and improper storage.
