Commemorations of Grazia Deledda

Overview

Events and publications surrounding the centenary of Nobel Prize-winning author Grazia Deledda’s recognition have emerged in Italy.

In Castelsardo, the municipality and the InSchibboleth association organized a conference titled ‘Dipingere con le parole. Grazia Deledda e l’arte del Novecento’ at the Castello dei Doria. Led by scholar Angela Guiso, the event connects Deledda’s legacy to 20th-century Sardinian art and is linked to the ‘Ritorno al Novecento’ exhibition. Mayor Maria Lucia Tirotto emphasized the importance of promoting the work of the only Italian woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature to new generations.

Concurrently, Claudio Saltarelli released a two-volume tragedy, ‘Oltre i Girasoli di cui non t’ho detto’, which examines the personal hardships and social contradictions of Deledda’s life. Presented at PalabancaEventi, the work explores her youth, artistic formation, and the personal losses—including the death of her father, grandmother, and sister—that shaped her journey.

Various exhibitions are also underway. In Saronno, the Liceo Legnani is hosting an exhibition with the Circolo Culturale Sardo APS ‘Grazia Deledda’ through September 30, including a student competition. In Viadana, the MuVi museum presents ‘Le parole di Grazia’ until December 20, featuring works from the Civic Library’s collection and Deledda’s personal piano.

New literary initiatives include the release of ‘La leggenda nera e altri racconti giovanili’ by Caravaggio Editore, a collection of sixteen rare novellas written between 1888 and 1892. Additionally, the Ethno’s Festival Letterario in Martis and a narrative concert in Biella titled ‘Canne al vento. L’amore non conosce povertà’ have further honored her legacy.
