Escalating commercial bombings and arson in Rome East

Overview

A series of explosions and targeted attacks against commercial businesses and public venues in eastern Rome has escalated. Following at least seven reported devices in areas such as Alessandrino, Don Bosco, Casilina, Centocelle, and San Basilio, new incidents of arson and explosives have been documented. On October 20, an arson attack at an auto dealership on via Prenestina destroyed nine cars and one van. Security footage captured two hooded individuals pouring flammable liquid on the vehicles during the early morning hours. This incident was preceded by the detonation of a rudimentary explosive device, possibly a ‘paper bomb’, in front of the residence of dealership owner Luciano Incalza in the Castelverde area. While the blast damaged a gate and entrance structure, no injuries were reported. Incalza released the footage and characterized the perpetrators as ‘cowards.’ On October 23, new incidents were reported in the Ostiense district and Ciampino. An explosion in the basement of a pizzeria on Viale Giustiniano Imperatore caused a fire and thick smoke to spread through a six-story building, though no injuries were reported. In Ciampino, an overnight explosion occurred in front of a Snai betting shop on Via della Folgarella. Residents described the device as appearing to be a ‘paper bomb’, which damaged the shop’s shutter and signage. Authorities are investigating if this is linked to the ongoing campaign. On the evening of October 23, a violent explosion occurred in Ostia at the intersection of Viale Vasco de Gama and Via dei Velieri. The blast destroyed the entrance of an Ater public housing complex and injured two people. Eleven families were evacuated from the building as a precaution. Preliminary investigations suggest the explosion may have been deliberate, as authorities reportedly found a large ‘paper bomb’ positioned at the entrance.
