Conca d’Oro shopping centre fire and partial reopening

Overview

A major fire devastated the Conca d’Oro shopping centre in Palermo, Sicily, causing significant structural damage and ceiling collapses. While the building was evacuated without customer or worker injuries, one firefighter was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Preliminary investigations suggested the blaze may have been caused by an electrical fault or a malfunction in rooftop heating or air conditioning units.

Recovery efforts have transitioned into a formal timeline established by the board of curators for Compal Srl, the center’s owner. Following a coordination meeting on September 28, Mayor Roberto Lagalla and Councilor Giuliano Forzinetti confirmed the administration was working to accelerate recovery and expedite bureaucratic procedures for the “cassa integrazione” (wage guarantee fund) to support the approximately 1,200 to 1,500 affected workers.

As of October 16, the shopping center has partially reopened to the public, specifically covering the “white zone” of the complex. The reopening was attended by Mayor Lagalla and Regional Assessor Edy Tamajo. However, the “red zone” remains inaccessible due to the severity of the fire damage. Concerns regarding tenant stability have materialized, with retailer Risparmio Casa expected to relocate rather than reopen.

The reopening has met with opposition from labor unions, including Filcams Cgil, Fisascat Cisl, and Uiltucs Uil. These organizations boycotted the ceremony, stating they did not view the event as a celebration. They cited the “precarious employment situation” for workers in affected zones, specifically highlighting concerns for those facing job losses or non-renewed fixed-term contracts.
