Croat political representation and 2026 election integrity

Overview

Leading up to the October 4, 2026, general elections, political tensions were high as Croatian leaders demanded protections for legitimate Croat representation. Mario Karamatić of the HSS warned that Croat-aligned parties might block government formation if Bosniak voters elected a Croat member of the Presidency against the majority will of the Croat electorate. Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman also expressed hope that the elections would correct historical injustices regarding the equality of the three constituent peoples. The election introduced biometric identification and optical scanners to improve accuracy, though concerns regarding scanner manipulation and disinformation campaigns persisted. Following the vote, the Central Election Commission (CIK) reported a voter turnout of 41.48 percent, approximately 10 percentage points lower than in 2022. To address discrepancies where ballot counts exceeded recorded voters by over two percent, the CIK ordered a manual recount at hundreds of polling stations. The CIK has since officially confirmed the results. In the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željka Cvijanović (SNSD) secured 55.56 percent of the votes. In Republika Srpska, Savo Minić (SNSD) was confirmed as president-elect with 52.10 percent of the vote, while the SNSD secured 34 mandates in the National Assembly of Srpska. Other confirmed winners include Ramiz Salkić (SDA) for the Bosniak Vice President position and Igor Balukčić (HDZ 1990) for the Croat Vice President position. In the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, 42 seats will be filled by 16 parties and coalitions, with the SDA holding the most mandates (nine), followed by the SNSD (six) and the SDP (five). In the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the SDA won 31 mandates for the House of Representatives, followed by the SDP with 16 and the HDZ BiH-led coalition with 15.
