Croatian historical and veteran commemorations

Overview

Croatia has held several regional commemorations honoring historical military figures and veterans.

In late August, ceremonies in Split and Kostrena marked anniversaries related to both World War II and the Homeland War. In Split, officials commemorated the 85th anniversary of the shooting of partisan detachments and addressed the recent burial of 500 Croatian victims exhumed from mass graves in Slovenia. During these proceedings, Ranko Britvić, president of the Association of Anti-Fascist Fighters and Anti-Fascists of the City of Split, criticized the political use of the modern Croatian flag to cover the remains of defeated World War II armies. In Kostrena, ceremonies honored the 35th anniversary of the formation of the A Battalion of the 111th Brigade of the National Guard.

In early September, commemorations expanded to include various regional events focused on Homeland War veterans. These included sports competitions and memorial services in Petrinja, the Dino Kunić Memorial meetings in Varaždin County, and the Medački džep gathering in Jelenje. Additionally, honors were presented to the Military Police Veterans Association in Slatina, and the Ivandol Volunteer Fire Department celebrated its 70th anniversary.
