Economic and export development in Chihuahua

Overview

Chihuahua has established itself as a significant driver of various Mexican export and economic sectors. In the technology sector, the state led the nation in high-tech exports during the first quarter of 2026, accounting for 52% of Mexico’s exports in computing, communication, and electronic components. This growth contributed to a total state export value of $35.986 billion, representing 24.3% of Mexico’s national total.

In Chihuahua Capital, economic growth is supported by 13 clusters in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, medical, and green technologies. Between 2021 and 2026, the city recorded $2,224 million in Foreign Direct Investment, completing over 43 new business investments and expansions. This period saw total employment increase by 11.8 percent, with the average real daily wage rising from 419 to approximately 670 pesos. To meet industrial demand, roughly 28 percent of local university graduates specialize in STEM fields.

Despite these gains, the manufacturing sector faces budgetary pressures due to the strengthening of the Mexican peso against the US dollar. René Espinosa Terrazas, president of Index, noted that because budgets are managed in dollars, the current exchange rate ‘increases daily operating costs and reduces local maneuvering margins.’ While market data from Banco Base confirms significant peso appreciation, Espinosa Terrazas stated that companies have no plans to leave the country.

Beyond manufacturing, Chihuahua is expanding through tourism and specialized agriculture. The state dominates the Mexican sotol industry with a 65% share of production capacity, with approximately 80% of produced sotol being sent to the United States.
