Overview

Throughout July and August 2026, Egypt experienced a series of intense heat waves driven by an Indian monsoon low and hot air from the Libyan desert.

In early July, temperatures reached 44 °C in Upper Egypt, with high humidity increasing perceived heat. By late July, the heat intensified, with Aswan recording 45 °C and Greater Cairo seeing perceived temperatures of 41 °C. By late July, a brief period of slightly lower temperatures occurred, with Cairo highs around 35 °C, though humidity remained a factor. Following a period of relative cooling, temperatures began to rise again in late August. The Egyptian Meteorological Authority forecast highs of 35–37 °C in Cairo—feeling like 39 °C due to humidity—and 41–43 °C in southern Upper Egypt. High humidity levels, potentially exceeding 90% on northern coasts, continued to drive perceived heat, while morning fog and maritime disturbances in the Red Sea were also forecast.
