Empresa Portuaria Iquique regional logistics development
Overview
The Board of Directors of Empresa Portuaria Iquique (EPI) has begun strategic regional meetings to position the Port of Iquique as a development driver for the Tarapacá Region. Led by President Max Barrera, the board has engaged with regional authorities and the current concessionaire, Iquique Terminal Internacional, to discuss logistics integration and the upcoming bidding process for port operations, as the current concession expires in 2030.
Following these discussions, EPI presented a proposal for the Tarapacá Regional Logistics Policy spanning 2026 to 2040. The initiative seeks to coordinate the port, airport, and Free Trade Zone (Zofri) to transform the area into a major South Pacific import and export center. Regional leaders, including Iquique Mayor Mauricio Soria, have expressed support for the plan, noting its potential to improve territorial connectivity, attract investment, and increase regional employment.
As part of broader maritime modernization efforts in Chile, the Tarapacá Regional Logistics Policy is now being highlighted alongside national discussions on port innovation and the transition to ‘Logistics 5.0.’ The policy specifically focuses on economic integration and the development of bioceanic corridors by integrating port operations with ‘last mile’ connectivity.
