Extreme weather and flooding in Ibiza and Formentera
Overview
Following extreme weather events known as DANAs, the Ibiza City Council implemented infrastructure and emergency response upgrades, including reinforcing Civil Protection and Local Police with specialized equipment and expanding drainage channels in areas like Es Pratet and Ses Feixes.
Recent heavy storms and intense electrical activity caused significant disruptions across the Pitiusas islands. In Formentera, emergency services recorded 18 incidents on a Monday, including 17 flooding-related calls and one electrical fire, following 56 incidents reported the previous day. In Ibiza, flooding impacted streets, businesses, and parking facilities. In Santa Eulària, vehicles at the es Canar parking lot were submerged up to their hoods, requiring crane rescues.
A second day of intense rainfall caused by DANA Adam led to overflowing streams and damage to beaches including es Figueral, Cala Llenya, and the Pou des Lleó area. Aemet reported that Vila recorded the highest rainfall in the Pitiusas islands with 83.4 liters per square meter. The downpour caused closures at the Rotonda de los Podencos, the Jesús roundabout, and sections of the airport road and the E-20 highway, while landslides were reported in Sant Carles and Sant Vicent. Local authorities responded to the red alert by suspending school sessions and closing municipal facilities.
The emergency status for Ibiza, Formentera, and Mallorca has since ended. The Inunbal Plan has transitioned to a recovery and normalization phase. The 112 Emergency Coordination Center managed a total of 424 incidents during the episode, including 170 in Ibiza and 68 in Formentera. The Military Emergencies Unit (UME) completed its tasks on Wednesday morning.
