Film festivals in Romania

In late August 2026, several film festivals in Romania announced their upcoming schedules and themes. Bucharest is set to host the Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival (BIEFF) from September 23 to September 30 under the theme ‘Vanishing Futures’, alongside the 21st Animest International Animation Film Festival, which runs from October 2 to October 11 with the theme ‘Animated by Nature’.

Other major cinematic events scheduled for September include the Bucharest International Film Festival (BIFF), featuring an international competition and a jury led by Eugenia Vodă.

The Alpin Film Festival is scheduled to take place from September 21 to 27 in Brașov, Râșnov, and Bușteni. The event will showcase over 40 mountain documentaries from more than 18 countries, including award-winning titles from major international festivals such as Cannes, IDFA, and Banff. Notable international screenings include the Australian production ‘Iron Winter’ and the French nature documentary ‘Le Chant des forêts’ by Vincent Munier. The festival will also host a Romanian mountain film competition for local productions from the last two years.

Additionally, regional activities include a free screening of the documentary ‘Povești la râu’ in Cluj-Napoca, and discounted ticket offers at Happy Cinema in Buzău for National Cinema Day celebrations.
