Ghana health donations and equipment support

Overview

In July 2026, community and institutional donors began a series of high-profile contributions to Ghana’s health sector. On 16 July, Dr Ama Antwiwaa Adu-Appiah received a Gh¢20,000 cash gift from the Paga Youth Movement, which she immediately spent on essential medical equipment for Paga Hospital. A week later, the Ghana Gold Board used its Special Intervention Programme to cover GH₵23,110 in medical costs for a patient, Madam Patience Ablakwa, released from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital following hernia reconstruction. Simultaneously, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) delivered a full container of medical supplies to the Ghana Prisons Service, an intervention described as historic for improving healthcare for inmates, staff, and visitors. On 1 August, BOSTenergies contributed GH₵1 million to the GMTF to finance specialised treatments—such as chemotherapy, dialysis, and heart or brain surgery—for Ghanaians unable to afford care. By late August, the GMTF, also known as Mahama Care, began providing financial assistance for cancer patients in the Volta Region. Seven clients have been registered so far; while some receive care at Ho Teaching Hospital, others have been referred to specialized facilities in Accra and Kumasi due to local service limitations. During the National Mining Dialogue 2026, GMTF Administrator Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku urged mining companies to expand their corporate social responsibility to include medical systems, noting critical shortages in the public tertiary sector, including a lack of MRI, mammogram, and radiotherapy machines. To address medicine shortages, the Ghana Prisons Service is launching a centralized ‘Medicine Bank’ on 30 September 2026. In preparation, the Ghana Medical Association’s Central Regional Division conducted health screenings for 334 inmates and officers at Ankaful Maximum Security Prison, donating assorted medical supplies to the facility. In late August, the GMTF expanded its reach through new partnerships.
